God Is Bigger

“WHAT could we possibly have to worry about that’s bigger than our God?”

‘Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”’ James 4:13-15

As a third-generation professional worrier, this passage from James recently grabbed onto my heart and reminded me that this life is so much bigger than my worries.

A few years back, I found myself without a job. I was a single mom with two kids, and I was terrified. It was a really strange and challenging season for me. It turned out to be a season of deliverance and answered prayers all wrapped up into one “crisis.”

I'd been diligently asking God, “Now what? Where do I go from here? What’s next? I KNOW you’re going to provide the right place, and the right time, and the right situation. I KNOW that You heard my prayer to be delivered from my previous situation, and answered.”

The thing is, as I mentioned before, I’m a third generation worrier. I don’t blame anyone for that, it’s just the pattern of my life. Ask God, but keep worrying. That’s the rhythm, right?  Wrong.  Did you ever consider that that worrying was a form of arrogance? When I first read that, it hit me right in the gut!

I’ve never considered myself an arrogant or boastful person. But, I realized that in my desire to obey what God has for me next, I had not completely given Him control of the outcome. I continued to worry about my kids, my finances, my health care, and every other thing you could think of.  I inadvertently removed Jesus from the outcome and put my hope in my own abilities.

My abilities are NOT God’s abilities.

It’s not about what WE do, but what GOD has done THROUGH us. Our God created this universe and could wipe it out at the blink of an eye if He so desired. WHAT could we possibly have to worry about that’s bigger than our God? It truly is a pattern of behavior, and those of us who are worriers have to pray that God molds and changes in us. This is one of those Joshua 1:9 (“Be strong and courageous”) opportunities. Give it to God.

Action Steps:

  • Listen to “God Is Bigger” from Veggie Tales. This song from my son’s childhood (he’ll be 30 this year!) keeps running through my head. It says “God is bigger than the boogie man, He’s bigger than Godzilla or the monsters on TV, Oh, God is bigger than the boogie man, and He’s watching out for you and me. So are you frightened? Are you worried? Not at all! I know what ever’s gonna happen, that God can handle it!” Doesn’t that really sum it up? God IS bigger. Give him your worries.

Prayer: God, deliver me from worry and anxiety. I realize that keeping it for myself truly is a posture of arrogance and egotism. Help me to be assured that You’re so big that there’s nothing that You don’t have Your hand over in my life. I want to allow You to work as only You can in my situation, and I thank You for who You are. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
