Would You like Some Bread While You Wait?

“God knew that I was hungry and thirsty for Him, when I didn’t have the ability to ask him for food or water.”

“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” John 6:35
How does Bread of Life help me while I’m in the middle of waiting? I’m down for some bread, but what I’d really like is for the waiting to end. Typically, though, that’s not how God works. His ways are not our ways, praise the Lord!
I’ve been reflecting on seasons of my life where “waiting” was at the forefront. A lot of them were seasons of anguish, wondering where my husband would find a job and where it would take us. Waiting on the test to be positive so we could have sweet little babies. Waiting after a surgery for the recovery process to please be over soon.
My most memorable period of waiting, however, was when my sweet girl was in the ICU. At 3 years old, she had jumped into a pool when no one was looking and nearly drowned. I couldn’t be in the hospital with her because her sister was just a few months old. I drove back and forth twice a day for 5 days. The waiting to hear if she was going to be okay was agony. I had nothing to contribute, nothing I was able to do that would help or make it better. I couldn’t even pray. I felt like I didn’t have (or want) the faith to trust God in that waiting. I forgot that no matter what, He is good.
But God.
He was faithful when I was not. Even though I didn’t want it in the moment, He provided Bread of Life during my waiting, and has been so powerful since. I couldn’t pray, so He gave me memory verses from childhood and the absolute perfect worship songs on the radio. I didn’t have to use my own words; He gave them to me. It was still a season of waiting, followed by a season of fear and anxiety. But I wasn’t alone in it. God knew that I was hungry and thirsty for Him, when I didn’t have the ability to ask Him for food or water. He brought words, friends, therapy, truth, and so much love.
My encouragement to you, momma, is to ask God for His provision in the waiting seasons of your life. I don’t know how the season will end for you, but I do know that He is good and faithful and takes care of His children while we wait. He will provide what you don’t realize you needed. My prayer for you is that He would open your eyes to see His good gifts around you that are meant to sustain you in this season.
Action Steps
Reflect on your own seasons of waiting. How has God provided for you before the season was over? Thank Him for His goodness and mercy.
Prayer: Father, thank You for loving us so much that You won’t give up on us. When we are distracted by the difficulties in this world and become stuck in waiting, You are there. You know exactly what the future holds and what we need in this season to get through it. Please fill us with the bread of life and living water. Keep our eyes focused on You, so that this season of waiting might bring us closer to You.
