Will I Ever Catch a Break?

“It’s not if we will experience storms, it’s when we experience storms, and we must check our foundation daily.”

“The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Matthew 7:25 (NIV)

My dad once told me the following regarding the circumstances of life, “You either just got out of a problem, you’re currently in one, or you’re about to be in one”. Does this seem true for you? Are you constantly feeling the pressures of motherhood? Just when you think you have it all together yet another problem or tough circumstance presents itself. It may look a little something like this…

You so badly want to get pregnant, and it’s taking months, maybe years. It’s too much.

Your marriage is struggling, and you have young kids to take care of. It's too much.

Your children are grown, out of the house, and you’re scared of what the world will throw at them. It’s too much.

You just lost a child, a parent, a sibling, and now you don’t know how to move forward. It’s too much.

You can’t afford your home, your car, groceries, and your bills are piling up, it’s just way too much.

Whatever your circumstances are, do you think to yourself, “Will I ever just catch a break?” I hate to sound harsh, but I’ve come to the tough realization that the answer to this question is, no. I won’t catch a break.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 7:25 that if we hear His words and “put them into practice”, we can withstand any trial (using the metaphors of rain, rising stream, strong winds) that comes our way. He also tells us if we hear His words but don’t apply them to our lives, we won’t be able to withstand the storms. It would be like building our house, our foundation, on sand. It will gradually fall.

Mommas, we must read, hear, and apply God’s word to our lives. We live in a fallen world and will always experience pain and suffering, but we have been warned. It’s not if we will experience storms, it’s when we experience storms, and we must check our foundation daily. Your Heavenly Father wants to help you and hold you through it all – let Him.

Action Step:

  • Write down all the storms in your life right now. Pray over them, pray for God to help you and hold you through it all. He will listen, and He will give you peace in the toughest of circumstances.
