“Instead of seeking acceptance from others, remember, God accepts you and loves you.”

“Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety.” Proverbs 29:25 (NLT)
A sign indicating a stop up ahead, a light pointing out the gas is getting too low, a verbal cue from my husband letting me know he is having one of those days… I don’t know about you, but I so appreciate warnings.
This verse is a warning. It’s warning us of a particularly dangerous trap: fearing people. Originally, I didn’t think of myself as one who fears people. I am comfortable saying no to social invitations and walking at my own pace. However, as I allowed this verse to sink into my heart, I realized I do fear people. I care what people think of me. Why? I want to be liked and accepted, especially by other moms.
I believe the majority of us moms have a desire to be liked and accepted. Think about these scenarios below:
You engage in gossip with another mom because you don’t want her to think you’re uptight.
You allow your children to participate in activities that stretch the boundaries, because you don’t want other parents to think you're too overbearing.
You don’t share Jesus with friends, family, or co-workers, because you don’t want them to think you’re weird.
Can you relate? I sure can. Fearing people isn’t just a trap, it is a dangerous trap. Why? It has the potential of placing what people think over Truth. It has the potential of compromising our witness and obedience to God.
Scripture is clear, the only one we should fear is God. God is the most powerful, the Almighty. He loves us. He saves us. He changes us.
Instead of seeking acceptance from others, remember, God accepts you and loves you.
Action Steps:
Take a moment and reflect. How does fearing people play out in your life?
Next time you have a desire to be accepted, remind yourself God accepts you!
