The One

What one person could be so godly and so human at the same time?

"For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6 (CSB)

As time goes by, relationships evolve. Maybe you recently moved, or you started a new job, or maybe you recently joined a new small group at church. Life changes, big and small, can have a major impact on our relationships.

As I look back on the various relationships of my life, I can see God’s fingerprints all over my story. He has been strategically placing people into my life, orchestrating moments of time, to bring people together at the exact time I needed them. God, in His perfect plan, at times will move some relationships to the forefront, while others will linger in the distance, for reasons that we can’t understand. What is clear is that my closest relationships have a unique way of encouraging me in my walk with Him, speaking His truth to my soul.

Take a look and I think you’ll see that some of my relationships are probably pretty similar to yours.

Her, she is the wise one, blessed with knowledge and perspective. She’s who I go to when I need direction. I need her experience, her knowledge, her ability to point me back to the Father.

Her, she’s the peaceful one. She exudes tranquility and speaks calmness to my life, reminding me to cast my burdens to Him and release the worries and fears that cage me.

And her. She’s the loyal one. She has known me and seen me through my highest of highs and lowest of lows, yet remains constant, and has stood beside me for what seems like forever.

At different times in my life, these people have had different names. In other times, I felt the heartache and absence of a relationship, a person I thought I so desperately needed. In those moments, where it feels like you’re alone in a room full of people, in those days where your anxiety and worry are deafening, leaving you lost without a sense of direction. I felt that heartache in those seasons when hope feels just a little too far to reach.

It’s in those times when just anyone won't do. I need the One.

The One who is a Wonderful Counselor,

The One who is the Prince of Peace,

The Child born for us.

The Son given to us.

The Mighty God and Everlasting Father.

Isaiah spoke these words prophesying the only One who could simultaneously fulfill these seemingly contradictory characteristics. What one person could be so godly and so human at the same time? This description would have been unidentifiable to the people of his time. But to me, I recognize Him.

Jesus. The only One who can provide what no one else can.

Jesus. The only One who can fulfill my every need.

Let’s pray together, friend.

Heavenly Father, Thank you for all that you are. For being God Almighty and the loving, faithful friend who is always with us. We worship You, Lord, and praise Your holy name. Amen

Action Steps:

  • This Christmas season, as we celebrate the birth of our Savior, think about the words used to describe Him. Meditate on the truth of who He is, and remember that He is also right there beside you. Not just a baby in a manger, but the friend who is everything you have ever and will ever need.

  • Take a momentary hiatus from your Christmas music and listen to the song “House on a Hill” by Amanda Cook. Picture Him sitting right there beside you, and meditate on His desire for a deeper relationship with you.
