“Moms, we need to be careful to not be the bitter servant who does not increase the value of what we’ve been given.”

“For the one who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.” Matthew 25:29
Well, isn’t that cheerful. Doesn’t it give you the warm fuzzies? Probably not. In fact, your first reaction might be “This verse makes no sense,” and, “How can it possibly be in the Bible?” But I think there is a truth here for our modern momma hearts.
We are each given something to be responsible for. Our children. Our homes. Our relationships. If we are married, our husbands. If we are not, our singleness. And none of it was given to us by accident, but on purpose by a God who knows each of us individually, down to the number of hairs on our heads.
This verse in Matthew is pulled from a story about a nobleman who gave each of his servants a specific amount of money to be responsible for in his absence. The servants who took the money and increased its value were given more. But the servant who took the money with bitterness and did nothing to improve it lost it all. It was taken from him and given to the one who was the most responsible.
Moms, we need to be careful to not be the bitter servant who does not increase the value of what we’ve been given. It is so easy to look around at those who have, compare it to what we have, and allow it to fester in our hearts.
Maybe your home smaller and a little more run down than your friend’s. Don’t harden your heart and allow what you’ve been given to go to waste. Get up. Maintain it. Add beauty. Fill it with people. Use it to provide for those you love.
Maybe it’s something else you have that doesn’t meet your standards.
But this is what you have been given by the King. Look at it and realize that you are the servant who has indeed been given much. And much more will be given to you when you steward it well. Maybe not in material ways. You may live in this home, in this neighborhood, for the rest of your life. God may not ever change the circumstances that don’t meet your standards. But the Lord, the God who made it all for you, will fill your heart abundantly for His purposes.
Action Steps:
Is there an area in your home is creating bitterness in your heart? The floors? The bathroom? The kitchen counters? Something other than your home? Pray over it. Ask God to create contentedness in your heart. Then steward it well.
How can you improve what you’ve been given? What small step can you take to add beauty, cleanliness, functionality, whatever you feel is lacking? One step at a time, and your heart will be filled with His goodness.
