“The more we allow God to teach us His ways, the more we can teach His ways to our children, making us imitators of God.”

“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.” Ephesians 5:1
God uses motherhood for many purposes. Besides the obvious purpose we have, to care for infants and children, God uses motherhood to care for us too. We can learn so much about ourselves, about the world, and about God through being a mom.
As Paul writes in this verse from his letter to the Ephesians, we are God’s beloved children, and He teaches us His ways of love, grace, and kindness. Motherhood gives us the opportunity to “learn by doing” by allowing us to model God’s love for us.
God loves us, and so we have love to share.
God gives grace when we don’t deserve it and teaches us how to give grace even when it’s hard.
God’s kindness pours directly out of us and onto our children.
The more we allow God to teach us His ways, the more we can teach His ways to our children, making us imitators of God.
And that, mom friends, gives purpose to our motherhood, no matter what season we’re in. No matter what our children need from us, whether it’s love and cuddles or grace for mistakes, we are called to imitate God.
Take a moment to:
Look back on all God has taught you in motherhood. What is He currently teaching you? How do you share what you’ve been taught with your children?
Ask yourself, “Am I missing what God is showing me because I’m focused on other things?” Take time today to allow yourself to see what God is showing you. Notice His love, His grace, His kindness (and these are just a few attributes of God that He’ll show you). Notice God’s beauty around you and allow it to fuel your mothering.
Prayer: God, I want my children to see You in me. I want them to know that I love You and that’s why I am the mother that I am. I want everything I do to be done because of Your love for me. God, I ask You today to mold me into an image of You. Whatever my children need, teach me to model that. You are so good, so kind to love us as your own. Thank You. Amen
