Jesus Is in the Fire

“... we can trust He’s working for our freedom. Even with flames all around us.”

“Suddenly king Nebuchadnezer jumped up in alarm and said, “Didn’t we throw three men, bound hand and foot into the fire?” “That’s right, O king,” they said. “But look!” he said. “I see four men, walking around freely in the fire, completely unharmed! And the fourth man looks like a son of the gods!” Daniel 3:24-25 (MSG)
Girls. If I got to sit across the table from you today and ask about a time when you’ve felt or seen the presence of God in the midst of being “at a loss” in motherhood, my faith would be buoyed by all your accounts of God’s closeness, of the move of God’s faithful hand. I’m sure it would cross the span of behaviors, accidents, sickness and next stages. Man, it brings me to tears thinking of it as I write this. Thinking of all the times Jesus has shown Himself present.
Don’t miss what I didn’t say. I didn’t say all the times Jesus showed up, because that’s not scriptural. For those who are alive in Christ, held by His hand and saved by His sacrifice, He is never at a distance from us that He would have to show up from. Whether we have the eyes to see or the ears to hear in those certain situations, the fact doesn’t change that Jesus is present, involved, invested and sovereign in the big and the small.
But He showed me something in this verse today that I think you’ll love. In the Hebrew, the word “freely” means to loosen, as in to solve a problem and to freely dwell with. Don’t miss that momma…when Jesus is in our midst, when we dwell with Him no matter how hot the fire (and this life can get unbearably hot), we can trust He’s working for our freedom. Even with flames all around us.
The fact is, Jesus is always with us (Matthew 28:20) and where the presence of the Lord is, there is freedom (2 Cor. 3:17). Freedom that comes from being under the protective wing of the Only One who can not only solve our problems, but is sovereign over them. Jesus is the only One in whom we can dwell, who can walk us out of the fire alive. It all anchors on dwelling in Jesus, who is always present. No matter the fire of this life, this season or this motherhood, Jesus IS with us and in Him, we will make it through anything.

Prayer: Father, You are beautiful and worthy of praise. What would we do without You? Remind our hearts that You are with us always, as sure as the sky is blue. Help us to remember that freedom and purpose and protection are found by dwelling in You, under the shadow of Your wing. Help us to model that faith to our children, and to speak that truth into their lives. In Jesus faithful name.
