It Starts With Us

“We are encouraged to preach the word, in season and out of season, when it’s inconvenient and when it's easy.”

“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.” 2 Timothy 4:2

We live in a world that is increasingly focused away from what’s biblical, and as we go through different seasons of motherhood, what we’re rooted to will determine how we mother our children.

When our toddler is learning how to be a person, what values are we going to instill in them?

When our children start competitive sports, what influences will we allow?

When our preteens have trouble with friends, what advice will we give?

When our teens or young adults start dating, what or who will guide their relationships?

It starts with us, moms. What are we allowing to influence and guide us? What are the values we live by? What are we rooting ourselves to? Is it influences from the world?

Is your mothering rooted in Jesus?

Being “rooted” means we have a foundation of godliness that goes across all aspects of our lives. It’s a deep connection with God, a strong faith in Jesus. We should be so rooted in Jesus that in every season we can be ready to teach, guide, and discipline in a way that is biblical and draws our children closer to Jesus, so their roots can be planted. We are encouraged to preach the word, in season and out of season, when it’s inconvenient and when it's easy.

Does that mean we have to have the Bible memorized and know exactly what Jesus would do in every situation? Nope! It means inviting Jesus into our mothering, into the exact season we’re in right now. Seek Him, pray constantly, read and memorize a realistic amount of scripture, make time for worship music, spend time with Jesus, even if that means talking to Him while you’re folding laundry like He’s sitting on the couch next to you. And when we move on to the next season, the next milestone, He’ll be there waiting for us also!

Action Steps:

  • Reflect on situations that have come up at your house recently (For example: friend troubles, struggles with emotions, sibling arguments, questions about life). Were you ready with a biblical response? Were you ready with encouragement, patience and teaching? This is a hard one, moms!

  • If you find yourself not as rooted as you’d like, take one step today to plant those roots toward Jesus.
