Hard Love

Discipline is rarely, if ever, thought of as pleasant. We don't like to be corrected or told no, and neither do our kids. Most, if not all, of us have experienced “ruining our kids’ whole lives” by telling them no or correcting them for doing certain things. I break my work kids’ hearts on the daily by not letting them throw hands or do things that will cause them injury.
And it seems to me those feelings stay over time and just manifest differently. Maybe the tantrums have stopped, but there are arguments, attempted negotiations, or flat-out rebellion against standards and correction. Correcting and modifying our children's behavior is often exhausting and anything but joyful; however, it is always necessary.
Scripture tells us that God Himself disciplines those He loves, and we are to emulate God in everything we do. We can also see the benefits of discipline over time. And I believe that's where the peace of mind and gladness of heart come from: knowing God calls us to discipline our children and that when we do, we are doing what is best for them.
Action step:
Remind yourself that discipline rooted in love is part of your calling as a mom, and ask the Holy Spirit for His help. You don't have to do this alone!
Prayer:
God, thank You for loving us enough to discipline us. It's unpleasant, but we can trust that You have our best interests at heart. We know Your ways are best, and as You discipline us, we know You are modeling a loving way to discipline our children. Will You guide us and fill us with Your love as we discipline our kids? May our children see Your love through us. In Your name I pray, amen.
