“We can get so caught up in our wants, so focused on being the world’s definition of “cool” that we tend to forget God’s truth and what He wants for them."

“Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father.” 1 John 2:15-17 MSG
Even as Jesus-following moms, it’s so easy to fall into the “worlds” way of thinking, especially when it comes to our kids. We always want the “best” for our children. Maybe we want them to be popular, or be an A+ student, or the MVP of their sports team. We can get so caught up in our wants, so focused on being the world’s definition of “cool” that we tend to forget God’s truth and what He wants for them.
So what does God want for our children?
He wants them to know and love Jesus. In Mark 10:14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Our children naturally desire to know Jesus more. So immerse them in the Word and show Jesus to them.
God wants our children protected from the ways of this world. We should be teaching our children by our example. As Proverbs 13:20 says, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” Remember, our kids are watching us, and looking to us for proper guidance. Show them that a life filled with Jesus is more important than material and worldly things.
God also wants them to be filled with truth and trained to be disciples for Him. Deuteronomy 6:5-8 says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” Be a “cool” mom by training your children to write God's word on their hearts, on their sleeves, book bags, sports equipment, notebooks, and anything else you can think of!
God’s definition of “cool”, and His idea of “best” for your children, far outshines the world’s definition. Show your children, through your walk with Jesus, that it’s the “cool” thing to do!
Action Steps
Have your kids memorize scriptures. Start small and continue to add more as they grow.
Pray with them each day, pray before school, pray before a performance or game. Pray before a meal (even when you eat out), make praying a simple act of obedience to God.
Find Christian songs to replace secular music that your kids may be listening to. What goes in our minds each day is so important.
Prayer: Jesus, help us grow closer to You each day. Show us ways to bring our kids and their future to You. Jesus, we want to be more like You and less like the world around us. Show us the things of this world that we need to step away from so that we can live a life of love and peace in your presence, shining Your light to others around us. Thank you, Jesus, for all the blessings we receive by spending our time with You. And give us the strength to say goodbye to our worldly ways and transform us into the person You want us to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
