Called to a Bigger Story

“God called Joseph out of his own small story and into God’s bigger story.”

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

If you read back a few verses, you’ll find that these words were spoken to Joseph by an angel, because he had been considering divorcing Mary (back then engagements were a big deal to break off).

Joseph thought, though he didn’t yet know the whole story, that Mary had been unfaithful to him. In that culture, she could have been stoned to death for that behavior. Joseph was a man of integrity, so he did not want harm to come to Mary but, also, was hurt. He intended to divorce her quietly so as not to bring attention to it all. That story would have been easier for Joseph. He’d leave Mary to her own choices, move on to another bride, build some carpentry things, have some kids, and go on with his life. A nice, quiet life, without public shame or outstanding difficulty.

But God interrupted that plan and called Joseph to a different and more difficult life. To marry a woman who was already pregnant. To raise a son who was not his own. To endure public ridicule and shame. But God also gave Joseph the incredible opportunity of raising the literal Messiah, God in human form, Jesus Christ. God called Joseph out of his own small story and into God’s bigger story.

I think it’s safe to say we’d all like that quiet life, without difficulty and pain. But God didn’t call Joseph to that, and He likely hasn’t called us to that either.

Momma, have you noticed lately that it’s a bit more difficult to be a true follower of Jesus in this world? It’s a lot simpler to follow the world, cut out difficult people or situations, and do your own thing. It’s putting ourselves before all else, and hardening ourselves against everything. That’s a small story to be a part of. The bigger story, following what God has called us to, would be to have a soft heart, love big, be forgiving, be kind, have compassion and grace and mercy, don’t shy away from the truth. Being vulnerable and inviting others in, sharing God’s love and forgiveness with those around us.

Which story will you follow? The small one, with small rewards? Or are you going to follow Jesus into a bigger, more difficult story where we get to experience who He really is? He is Jesus Christ, the literal Messiah. Our King. Our friend. Don’t miss out on this big story just to make life easier for yourself now. Imagine if Joseph had opted out. What a tragedy that would have been.

Action Step:

  • As the holidays approach, and we contemplate what is worthy of our time and energy, remember Joseph. Open your heart to where God is calling you.  Don’t opt out. What a tragedy it might be if you miss out on these relationships and callings. Certainly the reward is small for small efforts. Step into God’s bigger story for you and your family.
