Ask God
“...if we turn to God when we lack wisdom, He will joyously and abundantly show us His ways.”

“Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5
I sat down to think about this verse and found myself asking Jesus, the Holy Spirit, for wisdom and the words that He would speak for the moms who need to hear it. I chuckled to myself because there really isn’t a thing at the age of 45 that I don’t ask the Lord for wisdom for, mom. If making it almost half a century has taught me anything it’s that I really don’t know much, and even the things I do know need to be filtered through His leading to make sure I haven’t jaded or colored it with my own perspective. The same is true for parenting.
I have a friend who is beautiful and smart and feisty. She’s like an Erin Brockovich of the town close to where I live. She loves Jesus and is passionate about loving her older kids with purpose, but still to this day when we talk about teaching them God‘s word, her response is “I’m not smart enough so I trust the church to do it.”
Maybe you can relate to that. It’s a refrain I’ve heard from so many passionate Jesus followers, so many purposeful mamas. But I want to remind you today the simple truth of this verse in James and the beauty of the Word of God is that it doesn’t have to feel true to still remain true. If this first promises us that if we turn to God when we lack wisdom, He will joyously and abundantly show us His ways. He will give us His words, bless us with insight, and change our hearts so we can hear our kids hearts rightly.
This week we’re gonna remind each other of some helpful ways to ask for wisdom because, sister, with the Word of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit you have all the wisdom available to you that your kids could ever need, no matter the situation or the question. Today, reflect on this verse and let this truth sink in.
Faith Follow-Through:
This week, take some time to grow in motherhood and faith:
Tuesday:
Listen & Pray
Pray in the moment. When your child brings you something you don’t know how to handle,
pause before answering and ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom. Then, pray together! Let your child see that you don’t have all the answers but you know Who does. Make “I don’t know, but let’s pray about it” a family motto. And then help them practice listening and waiting for the Lords answers.
Wednesday:
Find the Answer Together
Go to God’s Word together. When you don’t know what to say, search scripture for what God
has already said. Don’t be afraid to learn alongside your kiddos; we’re always growing. You
don’t have to be the expert to open the Bible.
Pray, listen for His leading and then utilize a good search engine like “Bible Hub” to help you find scriptures. Teach your children how to seek truth by running life’s questions through the word and listening for the Spirit of God to lead you according to it… not just how to find answers.
Thursday:
Involve Community
Know who your trusted voices are. Identify 2–3 godly people you can turn to when you need
wisdom. Ask for help without shame. Seek counsel from mature believers who know Scripture and love your children. There is a great deal of wisdom in prayerfully letting our kids have godly voices outside of you. Sometimes they need to hear wisdom from another trusted believer—and sometimes you do too.
