Are You Salty?

“If we lose our flavor, we will become no help to anyone…watered down like every other false hope trod into the ground.”

“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its saltiness? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.” Matthew 5:13
In biblical times, salt used to be so valuable they would pay their soldiers wages in it. Friend, I could get behind that. I love salt. But you know what I don’t love? When I run out. When there’s no salt left for my popcorn. Or, when the shaker gets moisture and I can’t use it for anything. But I digress…sort of.
Most of the salt used in ancient Israel came from the Dead Sea. But being seawater, it was contaminated with impurities and needed to be separated. Separating salt from water takes a ton of energy because salt and water form a strong chemical bond that’s difficult to break.
Jesus compares His followers to salt, telling us not to DO salt-shaking, but to BE salt. BEING salt is walking faithfully with the Lord according to His way, His Spirit and His Word. Our saltiness…it’s precious.
Over my years of parenting, my husband and I have been confronted with the opinions of other parents and, believe it or not, within our own family circles. We’ve been told our hard passes are unnecessary, and our standards are antiquated. And now, as our kids have hit teen years, they feel the pull of the world and friends as hard as any of us. They haven’t attended every event or always made the popular choice, and they’ve been “light-heartedly” called weird more than once by friends.
So, are we…weird? Are we weird moms for holding fast to Jesus and His way even as the world follows a different tide? Man, I hope so.
Because the truth is, like impure salt, if we compromise the way He’s given us to live, we lose our ability to preserve our family, our communities, our culture. The world has a way of creating a strong bond with our hearts and souls, and we’ll use our energy and effort to separate the two instead of living as light. If we lose our flavor, we will become no help to anyone…watered down like every other false hope trod into the ground.
Mommas, let’s be keepers of the salt at home and protect it through the Word and prayer and praise. And remember, you are not alone! You have a community of like-hearted moms right here ready to be weirdos with you!
Action Steps:
Get yourself a salty community, and I don’t mean irritable. If you need one, our Motherhood Meets Faith Online Community is fantastic! Faith-filled, authentic moms encouraging each other to live and parent towards Jesus.
Get yourself some salty music to listen to, and a book that points you unashamedly towards Jesus!
If you have a particular body of water pulling at your saltiness, look up scriptures that draw that part of your heart back towards the Lord and post them around the house where you’ll see them!
Prayer: Beautiful Jesus, would You tune our hearts, eyes, and ears toward You and Your way? Would You make us wise as serpents to the call of the waters of this world that would want to bond with us and pull us from Your way? You are enough for us. Satisfy all the parts of our momma hearts with our presence and love, and lead us to a people who will help us walk towards purity. In Your faithful name.
