You Can't Do It All and That's Okay

"Moms, next time you feel that you aren’t doing enough – remember, God tells us it’s good to work and be busy but he also tells us we need balance."

“Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.” Ecclesiastes 4:6 (NIV)

Do you struggle with balancing the craziness of mom life?

Maybe you work a part-time or full-time job, or maybe you stay home full-time. No matter which mom you are – God makes it very clear that we need balance. As moms, we want to do all the things and be everywhere for everyone at once. We want to make dinner, have a clean home, provide for our families, be room mom, caravan our kids to sports, bake birthday treats, take our kids fun places, do the laundry, and the list goes on and on and on. But do you ever feel at the end of the day that you are chasing after the wind at times?

You’re doing all these things and staying busy… but why?

When I became a mom, I started comparing myself to other moms. I would think, “Gosh, she has it all together,“ and “How does she do it ALL?” There’s something inside of me when I see that mom that makes me worry I’m not doing enough. I drive myself crazy to try to be like her. There is no balance, just extremes. There is a never-ending list of to do’s, all because I want others to see me as the mom who can do it all.

Solomon tells us in Ecclesiastes 4:6 that it is better one handful of tranquility (this means rest) than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind. God is literally telling us we need to work but we also need to rest! No extremes.

Moms, next time you feel that you aren’t doing enough – remember, God tells us it’s good to work and be busy but he also tells us we need balance. One handful of work and one handful of rest. He wants us to enjoy the life He’s so graciously given us. He wants us to be present with our kids, our husbands, our friends and family. He wants us to make extra time for Him. We can’t do it all. We weren’t created to do it all. And that’s okay!

Action Steps:

  • Look at your to-do list for this week. What is necessary? What can wait until next week? Take extra time this week to enjoy time with your family and enjoy extra time with God.

  • Listen to “Overflow” by Red Rocks Worship when you’re feeling overwhelmed.
