Words Hurt!

“Just as God used his words to create the universe, we need to use our words to build our children up creating disciples in Christ.”

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:6 NIV

We all know the saying, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me!” I think I’ve probably even repeated it to my son one of the hundreds of times that he has tattled on his older sister for something she’s said to him. But in all honesty, I’m not a fan of this saying. In fact, I think it’s a downright lie! Now don’t get me wrong, I’d rather my daughter be teasing her little brother with words than breaking his bones but, WORDS HURT.  Bones can be set back into place by a doctor, monitored and healed. But words…. they enter the soul where no one can see them or heal them. They wait in the dark corners for you to have a moment of weakness and then they come back to tease and taunt you.

We learn the power of words as soon as we open our Bibles. Genesis 1:3 says, “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”  Our Heavenly Father created our whole world with the power in His WORDS. Paul tells us the importance of spoken words in Ephesians 4:29 “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

So, mom, remember the power in our words, especially in our weak moments when we’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed, as happens often in motherhood. Do not be quick to reply with words that are not helpful when your children are misbehaving or needing discipline. It’s inevitable that we are at times going to say something to our children that we regret, we are human. When this happens, don’t brush it off, but humble yourself and apologize. Explain to your child why your behavior was not pleasing to God and teach them through your mistakes.  Just as God used his words to create the universe, we need to use our words to build our children up, creating disciples in Christ.

Action Step:

  • Read Ephesians 4:29-32, 5:1-2

  • Pray: Dear Father, forgive me for the times I have spoken unhelpful or unkind words to others. Thank You for teaching me how to use my words wisely with the examples You have given me in Your Word, the Bible. I pray You help me to speak words that are full of wisdom, love, and Your truth always. Amen.
