Walking by Faith

“The Lord is worthy of our trust and obedience.”

By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed and set out for a place that he was going to receive as an inheritance. He went out, even though he did not know where he was going.

Hebrews 11:8 (CSB)

God calls Abraham to follow him in Genesis 12:1. Yet before that call, we see God working in Abraham’s life. Terah, Abraham’s father, took their family and settled in the Haran (Gen. 11:31-32). Commentators have no reason as to why Terah did this. But we can trust that it was God who was in control over where Abraham was, and God did not want Abraham to stay where he was.

Abraham was a pagan who worshiped everything else besides the Lord. It seems like out of the blue, the Lord calls to Abraham. What is Abraham’s response? “So Abram [Abraham] went (Gen. 12:4). Abraham left his relatives and land to a new land God promised him in complete obedience. The author of Hebrews writes, “By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed and set out for a place that he was going to receive as an inheritance. He went out, even though he did not know where he was going” (Heb. 11:8).

On Abraham following God’s call, the Christian Standard Study Bible says, “Obedience to God often means leaving one thing in order to receive something else even better.” What is the Lord asking you to leave to follow Him to a new place? Where can you take a step of faith in following the Lord’s call? Whatever those steps may be, and wherever the Lord is leading you, may you go where God calls even without all the details and information. Let God work and don’t take His purposes into your own hands. The Lord is worthy of our trust and obedience.

Throughout this week, read all of Abraham’s story from Genesis 12:1 to 25:18. Try not to get stuck on single verses that may seem confusing. Rather, look at the big picture of the story. Watch how Abraham follows the Lord in faith and is called out of his comfort.

Faith Follow-Through:

This week, take some time to grow in motherhood and faith:

Tuesday:

  • Spend time in prayer, asking God to open your eyes to where He may be asking you to go, or something you are to do next. Pray that you would see where you are to take a step in faith in your life.

Wednesday:

  • Continue reading Genesis 12:1 to 25:18, Abrahams story

  • Listen to “Every Step” by CityAlight.

Thursday:

  • Reflect on the story of Abraham that you’ve read this week, and 2 Corinthians 5:7, which says, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Where is God asking you to follow Him next?
