Who Do We Trust?

“Moms, we do not have to bear life's burdens alone or live in worry about making the right decisions.”

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT

Full disclosure, trust is hard for me, and I do not like relying on others. Whether because of past experiences, personality, or stubbornness and pride – most likely, all of the above – I can lean toward hyper-independence. I want to be able to figure things out for myself and handle everything on my own. One problem with this, though, is that I'm easily overwhelmed.

The past few months have been a case study for me in feeling overwhelmed by my life. Between marriage, work, a move, losing a family member I spent almost 6 years caring for full-time, financial strain, and parenting, existence has been… a lot. And I know I'm not the only one who has had a lot going on.

What do we do when things become too much? Stretch ourselves to breaking trying to handle all the things? Hope we make the right moves and give our kids the right advice? Become paralyzed by worry? Or act as we're directed to by God's word?

Today's scripture tells us to seek God's will in everything instead of leaning on our own understanding. While this isn't always easy, it is always better. We are imperfect and limited; God is all-knowing, infinite, good, and kind. He is not surprised by anything happening in our lives, nor is He worried about what to do. He will not lead us astray. Moms, we do not have to bear life's burdens alone or live in worry about making the right decisions. When we are staggering under life's weight, God promises to bear our burdens with and for us if we will let Him.

Action steps:

  • Evaluate how you're living. Are you trusting God and accepting help from others, or trying to do everything alone? If you need to, bite the bullet and seek help.

  • Whenever you feel overwhelmed, take whatever you are dealing with to God. Pour your heart out and seek His direction, knowing He delights in you.

Prayer: God, I admit that I need You. I can’t, and don’t want to, do this all alone. Guide me, direct me, show me which path to take. Your ways are better. Amen.
