Well-Watered Moms

“We go through trials, hard seasons, difficult battles and we become spiritually thirsty, longing for the Lord to strengthen us, restore us, and give us living water.”

“The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.” Isaiah 58:11

I’ve never been great at gardening. I was raised in a home full of plants with a large garden in the backyard, but, for whatever reason, it was not a gift that I carried with me to my adult life. I’ve had many plants in my home but they rarely live more than a few weeks. My family knows not to give me a plant unless they want it to die.

I do have one plant, hanging in my living room. It’s a type that people claim “you can’t kill”. And while I have kept it alive for several years now, I frequently forget to water it for weeks at time. I wait until it’s extremely wilted and sad looking and then remember that it is, in fact, a living thing that needs water. I actually had a friend who was visiting say “I’m worried about your pothos… is it ok?”

All living things need water but we also need spiritual water to survive. “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.” (Psalm 63:1) We go through trials, hard seasons, difficult battles and we become spiritually thirsty, longing for the Lord to strengthen us, restore us, and give us living water.

Jesus told the woman at the well (John 4:13-14), Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

It’s so reassuring that in the midst of our battles we have a God that guides us, “waters” us, makes us like a garden that is well-watered. When you thirst for something more, when you long for something the world can’t give you, go to the well that is Jesus and ask Him to provide His living water. Ask Him to guide you, strengthen you and restore you to an ever-flowing spring.

Action Steps:

  • Are you thirsting for more of God? Pray right now and ask Him to fill you with water to restore your strength. Ask Him to make you a well-watered garden and ever-flowing stream.

  • Teach this to your children! They are fighting battles also. They are spiritually thirsty just like adults. If we don’t teach our children to get their guidance from Jesus, the actual well of living water that can quench their thirst like no other, they’ll be like my poor, sad, wilted pothos, longing for something more.
