We Are All Family

"We were slaves, and God sent His son so that we could be adopted into His family as children."

“But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.” Galatians 4:4-5 (NLT)

Family is a wonderful thing to have. They can bring joy and laughter, love. They can be a place of safety, security and comfort. Families are there for each other in good times and tough times. They lean on each other, depend on each other and most of all love each other.

I know all families look different. Maybe you didn’t grow up in a family like the one I described above, but I truly hope that as you’ve grown you’ve made your own family, whether it be your own husband and children, a blended family, or a family of friends.

No matter what family looks like to you, you’ll always have available to you the love and security that comes from being in a relationship with our God. Earthly families can only be and do so much for us because no matter how much they love us, God loves us more. God brings us more security and more comfort than our family can. The peace, love and joy that God gives us is more than any earthly relationship can.

God had a plan for Jesus. God knew exactly what we needed when He sent His son to us to buy us our freedom. We were slaves, broken by sin and death, when God sent His son so that we could be adopted into His family as children. With that adoption comes all the things I mentioned above, and so much more.

This Christmas season, my hope for you is that you recognize the gift you’ve received from God, and realize the magnitude of God inviting you to be His child.

Action Steps:

  • Reflect: What was your relationship with your family like when you were growing up? What are your familial relationships like now? How are these relationships different from what you can receive from being a child of God?

  • Prayer: God, I thank you that I can be adopted into your family. I’m so thankful for the gift of Jesus. Help me to recognize the sense of comfort and security that you give me, and help me feel your joy, peace and love this holiday season. Father, I love you so much. In your name I pray, amen.
