Songs of the Heart

“Singing praise and worship songs lifts our heart and soul back to Jesus.”

”speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.“ Ephesians‬ ‭5‬:‭19‬-‭20‬

‭‭I love to sing! Growing up, my family listened to a wide variety of music, and as I got older I found new music genres that I liked too. This has given me a wide range of music to draw inspiration from. And I will periodically burst out in song if someone says a phrase or a word that’s from a song that I know. Even in church, if the pastor says a scripture or story from the Bible that a song goes with, I’ll start singing it in my head. This tends to drive my kids/husband a bit crazy. They know that at some point during the day, I’m going to start singing a random song. And there’s nothing they can do about it.

Music is my escape. It’s where I go when my emotions are getting the best of me. It’s how I get motivated, it’s my comfort in times of sadness, it’s the lifter of my head.

The Bible tells us over and over to shout and sing to the Lord! But when our emotions get out of whack, is singing praises of thankfulness to God our first thought?

I try to think of Paul and Silas. They sat in a nasty jail, shackled to a filthy floor, surrounded by actual criminals. And what did they do? Cry, Scream, or ask God Why? Nope, they started singing praises to God and thanking Him! That’s not how I would’ve reacted!

It’s so easy for us to sing during the good times but we need to remember to sing in the tough times too. Jesus is listening and whether you can sing or not, He loves hearing your voice. Isaiah 51:11 says ”Those the Lord has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.“  I love that! I want everlasting joy throughout my life.

Singing praise and worship songs lifts our heart and soul back to Jesus. Our minds get filled with His word and we can’t help but sing our hearts out to Him. So cast all your emotions to God in praise and feel the weight of your day melt away.

Action Steps:

  • Take time to add worship to your devotional time

  • Listen to Godly music more and more, it’s amazing how a song can change your mood.

  • Find a song that speaks to you and sing it in times of stress, teach it to your family too!

  • Pray and ask Jesus to remind you to rejoice in all situations.
