Shiny Motherhood

“Moms have a built-in ministry, right in their own homes, full of little (or big) people to shine their light on.”

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 ESV

“I’m done”

“I can’t mom anymore”

“I want a real job”

— Things I’ve texted my husband this week

It’s no secret that mothering is hard. Babies, toddlers, kids, teens and adults, it’s all hard. It’s all exhausting. It’s enough to make any mom struggle to see the benefit in it some days.

But there is purpose in it.

Jesus called us to spread the gospel to everyone, to be a light, to do good works for His glory. Moms have a built-in ministry, right in their own homes, full of little (or big) people to shine their light on.

Some days I lose sight of that. I’m very passionate about connecting with and supporting moms, and sharing the love of Jesus with them. I could fill 40 hours a week with Motherhood Meets Faith related tasks. And God has definitely put that passion in my heart, knowing I would do all I can to fulfill it.

But He also, graciously, gifted me four beautiful little people that I have to shine on first.

Every boo-boo I kiss, every snuggle I give, every meal I make is a small way to let the light that Jesus gives me pour out of me, and onto my children.

Every correction, every difficult decision I have to make, every time I mirror Jesus is a way to point out the glory of God to my children.

No matter what season of motherhood you’re in, no matter if you work, stay home, or run your own ministry, prioritize your ministry of motherhood. Let Jesus fill you so full of His light that you’re overflowing, and then shine that light on your babies (small ones or big ones) first

Do it all for the glory of God, because He is so, so good to us.

Action Steps:

  • You can only shine light onto your kids if you’re allowing Jesus to pour into you. Remember to set your eyes on Him, spend time in prayer, in worship and in the Word. If you missed yesterday’s devotional on this topic, read it here!
