Called to Be Light

“Our light shines when we are connected to the source, Jesus, and allow Him to change us.”

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.” Matthew 5:14-15 (ESV)
Each player on my son’s tee-ball team was given an opportunity to choose a walk-up song. I asked my son which song he wanted for his “special” song. He picked “Ready, Set, Go” by Yancy. My mom heart was pleasantly surprised but then quickly melted into anxiousness. This song, in culture’s standard, is different. It is about listening to God speak and running in obedience. I knew this walk-up song choice would show everyone that we, as a family, were “different”.
As my heart began to wonder what everyone would think of us, God reminded me that we are called to be different – to be the light of the world.
I am called to be the light in this world. My son is called to be a light in this world. You may be wondering if you’re called to be a light in this world. If you find yourself in Christ, you are called, mom friend.
So how do we shine? Do we smile a lot? Do we keep peace? Do we help people? Do we people please? Do we act with kindness, generosity, and respect? Do we need to be a “good” person?
True everlasting light comes from Jesus Christ and shines through us to the outward world. “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” John 8:12. Jesus is the light, our light source.
When we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, He fills our heart with His presence – The Light. His leading changes our heart to reflect His more and more. Jesus is the source that allows us to shine and continue to shine. Our light shines when we are connected to the source, Jesus, and allow Him to change us.
At the end of the season, another tee-ball player’s mom approached me and mentioned that her son loved my son’s walk-up song, so much so that he started listening to it. I got in my car and cried. My son’s walk-up song planted seeds for God’s kingdom. That is what our light does, friends.
Moms, this world lives in darkness. Our children and their children need more and more light. Don’t place your light and your kid’s light under a basket. I was so tempted to redirect his song choice, and that would’ve been putting his light under a basket. Instead, let’s be bold and courageous by placing every light on a stand, allowing it to light up your entire tee-ball team, household, generations, and the world.
Action Steps:
Read Philippians 2:12-18

As a bonus, here is “Ready, Set, Go” by Yancy.
Join me in prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me and my family. You are true everlasting light, Lord. Help me to stay connected to You. Soften and transform my heart more and more, so I can shine Your Light into this dark world. In Your loving name, Amen.
