Rooted Through a Season of Changing Leaves

“My soul does not fear the change because He has proven to be in charge of everything, down to the color of the trees that sit outside my window.”

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8
I sat in my little reading nook, in my cherished reading chair, and sipped my hot coffee one morning. I looked out the window and watched the sun as it rose and stretched across a neighboring house and over the crisp orange leaves of a big ole tree in the yard. It reflected the sun's light perfectly. I just kind of sat in awe over it. It was so bright and beautiful. Fall is one of my favorite seasons. It brings so much physical change that you can actively see, right before your very eyes. It blows me away every year that God so loves even the trees, that He created them to prepare for the changing seasons. He establishes their roots and tells them how to spread for future security.
But as I sat in my chair, in a season of change myself, I can’t say that I felt the perfect reflection of the Son shining down on me. I haven’t handled this season very well (and can I add that this feels like that world's longest season in the history of seasons, ever?). I’ve often let the enemy's lies creep in and run my thoughts… lies about myself as a wife and mother. I’ve seen the change around me, but felt myself wallowing in uncertainty about the choices I’ve made, whether they were actually part of God’s plan.
But because of God's proven goodness, because of the confidence He has given in past seasons, I am reminded of that tree that sits outside my window. He has given me the fruit of faith in this season and I am so very grateful for that. He planted my roots, long ago, through other seasons of trials, so that my heart would know and trust who is in control when seasons change. My soul does not fear the change because He has proven to be in charge of everything, down to the color of the trees that sit outside my window.
So maybe you find yourself in a season of change too. Maybe you haven't reflected the Son as well as you know you should. Maybe you question if you’ll make it out of this season because frankly, its all a bit too much. Maybe your daily prayer lately is that God would just keep you afloat for another day. If thats you, I promise you that He is in control of it all, friend. He tells the rain to come, the sun to rise, the winds to blow and the trees to take root. Believe Him for it in your season of drought.
Action Steps:
Invite God into your life. Call out His name. If you don’t even know where to start, ask the Holy Spirit to intercede for you.
Deepen your own roots by spending time with God. This doesn’t have to be 4+ hours of uninterrupted time (though that would be amazing, amiright), but can be a few minutes reading a devo, reading a few verses to your kids over a meal, sitting in silence for a couple moments, all while asking God to meet you there and bless your time together.
Prayer: Father, what a good good Father You are. I thank You that all we have to do is call out Your name and You are there. I lift up every mama reading this today, that You would help her roots to be so deep in faith and trust in You, that she can breathe a deep genuine breath of relief that You are holding her. Be the gentle reminder that we all need to lay our woes at Your feet, trusting that You control it all. Remind us that with You, we don’t have to worry about coming droughts or seasons of change. Plant us in Your living water, and grow our confidence in You alone. We trust You, and we love You. Amen.
