Pray on All Occasions

“God calls us to prayer that is persistent, clear minded and spirit filled.”

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)

God calls us to prayer that is persistent, clear minded and spirit filled. I love this verse because when you break it down it’s so simple but the impact it can have in our prayer life is so significant.

In the Spirit” – Invite the Holy Spirit into your prayer time. When the Holy Spirit leads, our minds are clear, we’re not praying with our emotions, fears and worries but rather that the will of God be done. The Holy Spirit is our advocate and counselor, we can have confidence when we pray.

On all occasions” – Pray ALL the time, anytime! God wants to hear from you in every situation and in every thought, no matter if it’s big or small.

Be alert” – Ephesians 6:18 directly follows the verses about equipping ourselves with the armor of God, defeating attacks of the enemy and spiritual warfare. Being alert means being clear minded and relying on the Spirit because the enemy is prowling like a lion waiting to devour you. We know this, so be alert when you pray.

Praying for the Lord’s people” – Pray for others. God could have said, “pray for yourself”, but He didn’t. Reach out to your friends and family and ask how you can pray for them.

God doesn’t call us to only pray in our closets at the perfect quiet moment of the day, (although this is also a great time and place to pray) but rather all the time and on every occasion. Sometimes I think my prayers are less powerful if it’s in the moment, eyes open and kids screaming in the background, but no. Prayer is powerful all the time mommas, so pray Spirit-filled prayers and be persistent.

Action Step:

Prayer: Father, clear my mind of all things that are untrue. Pour Your spirit out in me when I pray to You, and may the power of Your presence give me a clear mind and protect me from any spiritual attacks. Please give me a heart that longs to pray for others more than myself. Thank You for Your word, that You give us clear direction on how to pray so we can draw closer to You and Your Holy Spirit. Amen.
