Perfect Power

“Instead of viewing challenges as signs of failure, we can recognize God’s power is made perfect when we depend on Him.”

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
I have had a tough month on the inside. Anyone else have times when your failures and attitude flaws are glaring you in the face, leaving you feeling… defeated? I’ve been walking with Jesus for 33 years, surely I should have this down by now, right? In my twenties, I thought I was a pretty decent person. I had my act together, had a “Mary” heart, loved others well, walked in grace.
And then I became a momma. I’ll be honest, motherhood has been a beautifully uphill battle for me. I am old enough now to realize that uphill IS the design because it keeps us dependent, and dependent is the place God most loves for us to be.
For those moments, the Word offers us passages like this one in 2 Corinthians. Jesus knew we (including mommas) would need the reminder to embrace our weaknesses and struggles, acknowledging that it is in those moments of vulnerability that God’s grace and strength are most evident. I’m a practical person, so given the next step in the plan, a blueprint or a list, I’ll walk it out. But the action step in this verse is to sit in the fact that I’m fatally flawed and can’t walk this life on my own. It ISN’T a step to move past, but a place I need to live from. A daily realization that He is the one that propels me forward, keeps me on the narrow path, reigns in my emotions and keeps me from acting like a martyr.
Instead of viewing challenges as signs of failure, we can recognize God’s power is made perfect when we depend on Him. We will always need to rely on God’s wisdom and support, but perhaps never more than in parenting. God’s grace is always abundant, and we can find strength in Him rather than in our own abilities.
Someone remind me of this daily, will ya?
Action Steps:
Today, sit in your weaknesses, rest in Christ’s power, and allow God’s grace to be sufficient in all the times you feel defeated.
We all need this reminder, so share the devotional with a friend who needs to hear it.
Prayer: Jesus, we need You more with every step of the climb. Help us to learn the most important lesson of relying on and resting in You. May we live and mother out of the place of Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
