Free to Choose

“Here’s your grace-filled, powerful reminder that your emotions may not match up when Jesus gives you an opportunity. Choose Christ’s way anyway.”

“So then, beloved ones, the flesh has no claims on us at all, and we have no further obligation to live in obedience to it. For when you live controlled by the flesh, you are about to die. But if the life of the Spirit put to death the corrupt ways of the flesh, we then taste his abundant life.” Romans 8:12 TPT

I vividly remember, in my mid 20’s, being in a situation where I knew I was supposed to choose loving-kindness, but I struggled because I just didn’t feel it. I’d prayed for warm fuzzies. I’d asked for God to change my heart. But the lack of feeling all came to a head in one memorable moment where I was explaining to God, passionately, that it just “felt fake, because I didn’t feel it!”. He very clearly responded, “I didn’t ask you to feel it. I asked you to obey.”

Man. Man, does that speak over so many of my moments, even almost 20 years later.

Because that is a truth that lines every ounce of the way of Jesus. Every ounce of this new life we’ve been given to walk out. Every moment, we have the choice to die to ourselves, and sometimes it feels like it’s literally going to kill you, amiright? We are given the choice to actually walk in the truth that we’ve been set free from the power of sin, because we have been.

Here’s your grace-filled, powerful reminder that your emotions may not match up when Jesus gives you an opportunity. Choose Christ’s way anyway.

Our hormones may rage against the choice, sin may crouch at our door, but we don’t have to open it. We just have to choose and trust that in God's kindness He will do the heart work that softens, restores, and makes our feelings match up. It really is that simple, even when it doesn’t feel that easy. This applies to every ounce of our life in Christ and to every interaction we have as moms. And we’ll probably need His help in most of them, which is something He loves. It’s His design: dependence of the vine (John 15:1-7) We are no longer bound to sin, to knee jerk feelings because “if the son sets you free, you are free indeed.” (John 8:36

We are free to choose, and grace abounds.

Onward sister. Onward.

Action Steps:

  • Ask for God's help. Always. Remember, that’s His design. Ask God to lead you to the scriptures that will speak to your situation.

  • It’s good to have a plan. Spend some time thinking over situations that are common in your day, or could possibly come up, and choose your biblical reaction to each of them. It may sound a bit silly, but we practice and prepare for so many important things in life. What could be more important than the life shaping moments of our day to day, and our interactions with family? Take those scriptures that God leads you to and practice your responses with them.

  • Remember: You get to CHOOSE momma! Sin doesn’t get to boss you and lead you around anymore!
