One Hopeful Family

“Our differences do not need to lead to divisions that cannot be reconciled, for we have all been reconciled by the blood of Christ.”

“There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism,  one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” Ephesians 4:4-6 (ESV)

There is much contained in these couple verses, but two themes stood out to me: unity and hope.

If it is indeed true that there is one body, one Spirit, and one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, then we are far more united as Christians than we realize. Believers are brothers and sisters in Christ, and they are united by the Holy Spirit. We are a family because of God himself. Our world is incredibly decisive, but that need not be the case for Christians. Our differences do not need to lead to divisions that cannot be reconciled, for we have all been reconciled by the blood of Christ.

We also have a hope that is profoundly deeper than the world’s definition of hope. The world says hope is something that we wish would happen, but have no assurance of. Yet our Christian hope, our hope found in the person of Christ, is as assured as Jesus’ tomb is empty. Our hope is a “confident expectancy.” Our hope is certain, coming, and glorious. We must live as a person who has this deep kind of hope. We are to be a people who know how our story will end.
