“In times of being overwhelmed and times of suffering, my rock is a place I crawl under to get away from the outside world.”

“But the Lord has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.” Psalm 94:22
Do you ever have times of weakness where you think to yourself, “I just need to get away”? Sometimes I feel like this at the end of the day when I look around and my home is a mess, my children are fighting, and the laundry is piling up. Or I’ll get this feeling on the rare occasion I sit down and turn on the nightly news and hear about the evilness happening in the world we live in. It’s easy to be consumed by overwhelming feelings of confusion and grief.
In those tough times I am thankful for “my God the rock”. The Hebrew word for rock indicates firmness, stability, and faithfulness. The word rock is used over and over again in the Bible, sometimes talking about the literal rock we have on earth, and sometimes the “Rock” refers to Jesus Christ and God. Just like the term has many meanings in the Bible, so does it in our lives.
What does your rock look like? Is your rock the foundation of your belief in God that you have built your life on? Is it keeping you stable in the storms that are sure to come?
To me, “my God the rock” is more like a giant boulder. In times of being overwhelmed and times of suffering, my rock is a place I crawl under to get away from the outside world. My rock protects me during these times of vulnerability while I put myself back together and prepare to enter back into the hustle and bustle of our sinful world. Once I come to terms with my suffering, I crawl out from under my rock and climb on top to get a better picture and understanding of what’s going on in my world, to clear my mind and heart and remind myself that I am a child of God and everything I endure is part of His plan. He will see me through any storm, He is my rock.
“You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.” Psalm 32:7
Action Step:
I encourage you to take a few minutes to search for examples of the times “Rock” is used in the Bible. Rock is a word that could easily be overlooked, but like everything else in the Bible, it has so much meaning and depth. Write down a few of the verses that really speak to you and reflect this week on what “God the rock” looks like in your day-to-day life.
Prayer: God, I thank You for being my Rock. I want my relationship with You to be so strong that You form a solid rock underneath me that I can crawl under when I’m overwhelmed and that I can stand on when I need a steady foundation. Show me how I need to strengthen my relationship with You. In Your name I pray, amen.
