“We need people to lift us up in prayer when we don’t have the words. We need to place a rock under others to give them the ability to rest.”

“When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.” Exodus 17:12 NIV
Let me paint a picture for you.
There was a war raging for as far as Moses could see. Death, pain, and suffering all around. He, along with Aaron and Hur, stood at the top of a mountain with God's staff in his hands. Moses knew that as long as he held the staff up, the Israelites (God’s people) had the advantage, but if he lowered his hands, the enemy seemed to dominate.
Moses knew that if he kept his focus on God, his hands raised to heaven, that He would be victorious in this war. But this picture painted leads us to verse 12 “When Moses’ hands grew tired, they (Aaron and Hur) took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.” It wasn’t a matter of if Moses’ arms grew tired, but when.
And maybe you’ve been there too, friend. When you have seen the wars being waged on your life. When you have relational struggles, financial struggles, health struggles and more. When you’re stuck between a rock and hard place. When death and pain and sufferings overwhelm you. And it's left you simply tired. You know your arms need to be stretched to heaven, but physically you just can’t even anymore. Even though, in the depths of your bones, you know the truths of God's goodness, but your arms are simply tired.
Moses didn’t face this war thinking he could do it alone, thinking he didn’t need a community or that he was strong enough on his own. No, he embraced Aaron and Hur (and probably with a sigh of relief), and allowed them to support him in this time of need. And because of his embrace of community, Moses’ hands remained steady.
So, Mom friend. Maybe life has worn you down. Or maybe you're in a good season, and have the privilege to be someone else’s Aaron or Hur. Either way, life will “life” all over us, and we all need help keeping our hands raised, as well as being able to lift the hands of others in our God-given groups. We need people to lift us up in prayer when we don’t have the words. We need to place a rock under others to give them the ability to rest.
We need to have a revolving door of receiving strength and also giving it.
Action Steps:
Spend time with Jesus today, asking Him to soften your heart toward community. Ask Him to show you who you need in your circle. Make room for Him to give opportunities to show up for people. Ask Him to highlight areas where your heart might be denying a community for yourself.

Prayer: Father in heaven, what a good God You are that You don’t ask us to do life alone. Not only guided by You and the Holy Spirit, but your hands and feet… the people that You have placed in our lives for specific seasons, and for specific reasons. God, we ask that You would help us to fully understand the importance of community and all that You have created it for. Soften our hearts, open our eyes to see how we are needed in other peoples lives. Teach us how to be Your hands and feet.
