But God

“He is orchestrating events to bring the children He so loves to Himself. And He’s invited US to be a part of it.”

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19

Story time. My friends in PA lovingly joke that I collect people. I go to the library and find a momma who needs friends, and bring her to mom group at our church. I go to swim lessons and find a momma who needs Christian community, and bring her to mom group. It’s never on purpose, but I have come to be comfortable with uncomfortably inviting when the Spirit gives a nudge.

Well, in August 2024 I was walking my kids to school. It had been a long summer and my brain was spent. I wasn’t in the mood to be friendly or make small talk, so when my kids saw a mom with a dog and wanted to pet the dog, I told them we weren’t going the same way, so redirected them toward school. It worked for that moment, we got to school and the three big kids (elementary) went off. My youngest and I turned around and headed home. I purposefully went a different way to avoid the lady with the dog, because, again, I just wasn’t feeling conversation.

But God.

We turned the corner and right in front of us was this massive saint Bernese mountain dog and his momma. She called out to US and asked if my daughter would like to pet the dog, and of course my 3yo did because she loves all fluffy things. So we walked with them a bit and ended up talking. They had just moved in, she has 3 kids around my kids ages, and they hadn’t found community yet. I was heading to mom group as soon as I got home, and, even knowing it was last minute, extended an invitation for her to join us. She said she’d think about it, and I thought that would probably be the end of that.

BUT GOD.

Not only did she come to the mom group that day, she stayed longer than I did. And she’s kept coming. She prays with us, she’s leaned into worship, she’s excited to introduce her kids and husband to Jesus.

Our Holy God is so good. He is orchestrating events to bring the children He so loves to Himself. And He’s invited US to be a part of it. It’s surreal to watch someone interact with God for maybe the first time and have their life and that of their family transformed.

Action Step:

  • Set aside your own comforts, fears, insecurities when it comes to invitation.  Maybe even your own feelings (I didn’t want to talk to people that day).  Lean more into obedience than self-motivation. Verse 20 in chapter 28 reminds us that we aren’t alone in the mission God gave each of us. If you don’t have the strength or energy, remember that He does.
