My Ally, My Friend

“I reminded my son that God has a purpose for his life, so he just needs to trust Him.”

”Behold, God is my helper and ally; The Lord is the sustainer of my soul [my upholder].“

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭54‬:‭4‬ ‭AMP‬‬

I love this translation of Psalm 54:4. Let this verse soak in for a second. God is my helper, God is upholding me! God lives to help us in our lives.

Our everyday battles might seem small and insignificant, but God wants us to bring them to Him. The best way for us to teach our children that God is in charge is by example. We have to live our lives looking to God for help, comfort, and provision.

I recently had some struggles with my middle child, as he was diagnosed with ADHD last year. He was struggling to focus at school, and this was causing disruptive behavior in his class. My mind was overwhelmed with questions on what to do. There is so much negativity around this diagnosis and I was scared that this would cause harm to my son’s life. I consulted other moms with kids who had ADHD, and family members helped me pray for guidance.

One mom gave me great and simple advice- take this to God, and trust what you hear from Him.

So I started looking for ways I could show my child that I was there with him through this battle. We started doing a devotional for boys together each night, and talking about how God made him special. I reminded my son that God has a purpose for his life, so he just needs to trust Him. And through this process, I realized God was talking to me too. I was leading by example; I needed to give my child’s battles to God.

Our kids are gifts from God and He chose us to be their parents. He knew we could use these struggles as a way to grow closer to Him, and gain wisdom and strength through each battle.

Action Steps:

  • Read all of Psalm 54. It’s a battle prayer/poem from David to God, and he is begging God for help. Use this psalm as an everyday prayer over your children and yourselves! God will not forsake you.

  • If your child is struggling with something, pray over them and with them. Always go to God.

  • Start a devotion that will remind your child God has a plan.

  • Ask other godly women for advice and guidance.

  • Find scripture that speaks to you and put it up where you can see it everyday. Use it in your daily prayers.
