More Than A Helper

“We’re an integral part of His design for marriage and we must be an integral part in strengthening our husbands.”

“The Lord God said, “it is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18 (NIV)
Moms, God said He made a helper suitable for our husbands...us! This isn’t just a helper in the sense of an assistant or an afterthought by God but the word used here for helper in Greek is Ezer. This word means so much more than what you might think helper means. In Phillip Payne’s book Man and Woman: One in Christ, he says, “The noun used here [ezer] throughout the Old Testament does not suggest ‘helper’ as in ‘servant,’ but help, savior, rescuer, protector, as in ‘God is our help’. In no other occurrence in the Old Testament does this refer to an inferior, but always to a superior or an equal…’help’ expresses that the woman is a help/strength who rescues or saves man.”
Wow.. God is saying that we help to strengthen our husbands! It seems like a lot of pressure, so how do we do this? Later in Genesis 2 it says that husband and wife become one flesh. If we are one flesh that means we must treat our spouse, the way we want to be treated. We love him, respect him, honor him, serve him and quickly forgive him when he messes up. I can’t help but think God designed marriage this way so that our kids can see their mom and dad love and forgive the way Jesus does to His children. We have an opportunity to show our children that when our husbands have weak moments we can be their strength and when mom has weak moments their dad is there to pick her up.
Moms, you were created to serve alongside your husband. Not just help him but to add strength to him! Without you, the story God wrote isn’t complete. We are not a slave to our husbands, or an afterthought to God’s perfect design. We’re an integral part of His design for marriage and we must be an integral part in strengthening our husbands. Our children need to see us moms loving their dads, serving them, respecting them and yes – strengthening them. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you strength during your weak moments. He always will.
Action Steps:
How can you serve your husband today? Do something special for him and let your kids help you!
If you’re not sure, send him a text, asking how you can serve him today.
