Like Cherished Treasure

“How can we study the bible deeper and prioritize scripture in our day to day?”

“If you keep seeking it like a man would seek silver, searching in hidden places for cherished treasure, then you will discover an awe of the lord and find the true knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:4-5

Girl, Proverbs 2 is all about the hidden treasure of wisdom in the Word, and the perfect place to flesh out this week’s question “How can we study the bible deeper and prioritize scripture in our day to day?” I imagine the beginning verses of this Proverb are where most of us find ourselves; we know the goodness of God is found in His Word, and the more we read it and store up His goodness, the more our hearts cry out for insight and understanding.

But the proverb doesn’t stop there (even though it’s a really good place to be!) Verses 4-5 invite us to search for, dig for, pursue the mysteries of God in the word, like we’re hunting a treasure of immense value. It’s less about finding wisdom easily and more about how much we want it and what we’re willing to do to get it. I promise you momma, there is treasure girl; life-giving, heart-solidifying, fire-in-the-bones treasure waiting for those of us who will make the Word important enough to seek out.

But first, I want to remind you, DON’T BE OVERWHELMED! I’m remembering the days of three littles under one roof and can hear myself say, “I don’t have time for a quiet thought, forget anything else!” but we’re going to talk about some simple ways to start the hunt and trust that our Father will joyfully meet us there and bless our efforts.

If you currently have a rhythm of getting in God’s word, that.is.awesome! Don’t change it, the Lord meets us anywhere we’re willing and reminds us that His Word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), that its God’s heart and words breathed out to us (2 Timothy 3:16), and that it’s light guides us in our choices and decisions and makes our pathway clear. But this week is about getting the extra blessing. Gifting our heart with not just knowledge but the treasure of understanding and the little gold nuggets our Father has hidden just to bless you.

Today or this week, reflect on some of these verses about the power of God’s word.

Romans 11:33 “Oh, the depth and the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!”

John 1:1 “In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God.”

Matthew 4:4 “It is written, man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withers and the flowers fall but the word of our God endures forever.”

Hebrews 4:12-13 “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than a double-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”

Faith Follow-Through:

This week, take some time to grow in motherhood and faith:

Tuesday:

START.

The first part of this week’s question was “How can we prioritize the bible in our day to day?” We’ve mentioned in the past, there are great benefits of reading a verse or two in the morning so you can think on it throughout the day and pray over it at night. Another really great tool is the YouVersion app! It gives you a scripture on your phone’s home screen first thing in the morning, and when you click it, there’s a 2-minute commentary. If you can make the time, there’s also a 10-minute guided prayer time that has been such a blessing to me.

No matter how you go about it, after you read the scripture, write it on a piece of paper and post it around your house for the week (bonus: the readers in your house will read it!) But here’s the kicker… get in the habit of asking the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart and give you understanding about those verses every time you see you them. Like the scripture says, cry out for wisdom and insight.

Wednesday:

PRIORITIZE.

Listen instead of reading. This is a game changer for prioritizing the word, and also a simple opportunity to dive deeper into a book of the bible or a topic the Lord’s laid on your heart. If you haven’t heard of The Bible Project (also available in a free app), it’s a fantastic place to start  studying any part of the Scripture deeper. You can start an in-depth study of the Bible or it’s topics, 10-15 minutes at a time while catching up on dishes or folding the laundry. Listen on headphones as your rock that baby or sit at practice. Don’t let the enemy guilt you with lies about “not being present.” 10-15 minutes of the word throughout your day will bless YOU and your children through you!

Thursday:

DEEPER.

Today we seek the treasure Proverbs talked about on Monday. I kid you not when I say studying the Word is one of my most favorite things. I wanted to share a few things the Lord has taught me in my own life, and I’m sure He’ll use them in yours too.

Pray before you read. We bear no fruit and have no understanding apart from God, so invite the Holy Spirit to speak to you in a way you’ll understand.

Depth comes in slowing down with what you read, not in reading more. Study one book slowly. Study smaller sections, 3-10 verses and read it three times (sometimes I feel lead to read the same few verses for a week or two.) God is not in a hurry. His ways are deep and purposeful so we do well by copying that. And remember, He loves meeting with us so much that He promises treasure in deep places.

Get a journal and ask questions!  This is such a practical way of digging for gold in scripture and has helped me find my own rhythm with God and His word. Ask questions about what you read. What stands out? Are there words that jump out to you (write them down and look them up)? What do these verses teach us about God? Where do you find Jesus in the story?

A fancy way of saying it is observation, interpretation, application. All that means is ask yourself: what does it say, what does it mean, how should I live differently because of it?

Sister, I’m excited and praying for you this week! Trust that the Lord has already met you in your desire to study and know Him deeper, and that He is leading you in your questions. Talk to the Lord about them throughout the day and in a way only He can, and He will draw you in, teach your spirit, and bring the diamonds of His Word to the surface…so much goodness and treasure lies ahead!
