Led in the Wilderness

“...mothering with complete ease wouldn’t grow us, we wouldn’t flourish into the women of God we’ve been called to be.”

ree
“Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.” ‭‭Exodus‬ ‭3‬:‭10‬-‭12‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Wouldn’t faith be more enjoyable, comfortable, and seemingly “easy” if we didn’t have to walk through the seasons of wilderness? I think if you asked most people this question, especially on a hard day, they’d say without hesitation; yes.

Then because of God’s loving kindness, we’d be reminded of all the stories shared in scripture regarding the wilderness and the same truth woven through each situation: God was there.

God is the always present help. He is the one guiding, directing, and protecting His people as they navigate the terrain before them. In their willingness to follow, their faith begins to flourish. We find that those in the wilderness soon become overcome by the faithfulness of God to give them what they need to see them through to the other side.

The lifelong calling of motherhood is no different. If the same question were asked that I shared at the beginning except in regard to motherhood, most moms would answer the same.

“Wouldn’t motherhood be more enjoyable, comfortable, and seemingly “easy” if we didn’t have to walk through the seasons of wilderness?”

If this question was posed after enduring a difficult season parenting toddlers, tweens, teens, or even adult children, we’d probably want to answer - yes.

However, in the very same way as our faith, mothering with complete ease wouldn’t grow us, we wouldn’t flourish into the women of God we’ve been called to be.

The wilderness seasons in life and in motherhood produce a trust, endurance, and lasting impact - a generational impact - that could only be created and orchestrated by our Almighty God.

Just as Moses had to trust God and walk into a season of wilderness as he was called to go to Pharaoh and be the leader of the Israelites to take them out of captivity, we must, too, trust God while having a faith and motherhood willing to endure for the sake of Christ and His Kingdom.
