Jesus Is Life, So Bread Is Life

“Jesus reminds us that He gives us what we need daily, to not worry about what’s to come.”

“Give us each day our daily bread.” Luke 11:3 NIV

I wish I could sit across from you with a coffee (caramel macchiato with 4 pumps of white mocha to be exact), in a cozy environment, look you in the eye and hear what it is that keeps you up at night. I mean, really look at you and listen to the gaps.

We all have gaps: the spaces that fill with worry about our kids, our marriage, our family situations, life. But very specifically, the anxiety that keeps us up at night about (but not limited to):

Are they eating enough broccoli?

Did they take their medicine?

Are they wearing their retainer?

Are we teaching our kids the right things?

Are they learning to lean into Jesus instead of this world?

Are they surrounding themselves with people that will lower them through the roof to get to Jesus?

Are they taking every thought captive, are they growing properly, are they being a good teammate, are they being respectful, are they showing the love of Christ when I’m not around?

If I don’t buy them a Stanley cup will they be scarred for life?

I could keep going and IYKYK...but you’re moms, so you DO know. You know all about these worries, anxieties, and complexities because you live them too. But listen, while you drink that coffee, I hear you, and I am nodding my head because I, too, am awake at night tossing these things around.

God tells us something that we sometimes have to be reminded of: He gives us our daily bread. In fact, He IS the daily bread. Jesus reminds us that He gives us what we need daily, to not worry about what’s to come. If we focus on Him, He will give us the sustenance for that day because He is the sustenance.

“Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’” John 6:35

Jesus is life. Jesus is the bread of life. Bread is life.

Action Steps:

  • Wake up each morning and just ask for the bread for that day, for exactly the sustenance you need to handle the day. And know you’ll receive it because Mark 11:24 tells us “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

Prayer: Father, thank You for our anxieties. It means that I am loving hard. My worries and my up-at-night tendencies means I am trying to steward these gifts from You well. I’m asking You to help me lay them at Your feet. That You can calm my heart and know that You will provide what I need, daily. Remind me, however many times a day that I need it, that You love my children and have Your hand on them. I also ask that someone, somewhere, creates a gluten-free bread that isn’t super expensive. In Your name, Amen.
