How to Be a Mom

Updated: Jul 27, 2024

“After getting into a deeper relationship with Christ, I realized that I wasn’t failing. I was just looking at the wrong sources to get my information on how to be a mom.”

“Our children will also serve him. Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord. His righteous acts will be told to those not yet born. They will hear about everything he has done.” Psalm 22:30-31

Motherhood…nothing truly prepares you for it. If there is any area of life that makes you feel unqualified, motherhood would be in that top tier. Just when you think you have the hang of something and a feeling of normalcy starts to form, something else comes up that causes you to go back to the beginning again.

Remember the book, What To Expect When You're Expecting? Oh, you better bet I had that book! I hate the unknown, and therefore I was trying to look for all the information I could so that I knew what to expect. I had to be prepared, and started to shape myself and shape my kids based on what I thought we all should be, which, I realized, was ultimately coming from culture. Yet, the problem with that is I still wasn’t prepared.

It wasn't until a few years ago, when my relationship with Jesus changed, and I was able to see motherhood through His viewpoint. I knew I couldn’t let culture tell me the “right way” to live my life. It was exhausting and draining trying to keep up, and I thought I was failing as a mom. After getting into a deeper relationship with Christ, I realized that I wasn’t failing. I was just looking at the wrong sources to get my information on how to be a mom.

The Bible needs to be our source of information. God has given us a book full of His truth and guidance for tough situations that will come. His Word is perfect for when we need to sit at the feet of Jesus with our worries and concerns. He will be the one who tells us how to be a mom, a lasting way to make a generational impact.

Because our children are the future Jesus-followers. They will serve Him and talk about the wonderful things He has done if we root ourselves in Jesus and use Him as a guide for how to be a mom.

Grow in your own relationship with God and allow Him to work through you and into your kids. Allow Him to shape you, so that you can help shape your kids. We’ve been given the greatest example of how we are to act. Use Jesus as the example to help you in your daily life of figuring out how to be a mom!

Action Steps:

  • Take some time to reflect on what is influencing you as a mom. Where and who are you looking to for guidance?

  • Take some time to reflect on your relationship with Jesus. In what areas do you need to grow so that you can start looking to Jesus as the source of your information and not society? (Praying before panicking? More time spent in the Word? Finding a community of godly mom-fluences?)

Prayer: God, thank You for making me a mom. There are so many times that I feel I am not cut out for this, but You tell me I am. Help me to remember I have been chosen for this role in my life, and You are always there with me. Help me to seek You more, so I can show Your love and character to my kids. Thank You, Lord, for showing me how to be a mom. I love You. Amen.
