El-Roi

“Beloved mama, just like with Hagar and Ishmael, God has never taken His eyes off of you.”

“O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.” Psalm 139:1 NLT

I think we all agree that motherhood can be isolating and make us feel invisible. I remember feeling like I stopped existing in people's minds as soon as they learned I was pregnant. Everyone's concern was for the baby (and I'm not saying they were wrong to care for him); it felt like no one cared about how I was. Then my life was wrapped up in caring for this tiny, helpless human, and I understood the concept of getting lost in motherhood.

This scripture also put me in mind of Hagar. The mother of Abraham's first son, she and Ishmael would eventually be cast out from all they knew with provisions that would run out all too soon. Then, just as Hagar knew she and her son were good as dead, lost in the wilderness, an angel appeared and told her God had heard Ishmael’s cries. “Then God opened Hagar’s eyes, and she saw a well full of water.” (Genesis 21:19a)

Beloved mama, just like with Hagar and Ishmael, God has never taken His eyes off of you. He has heard your cries. The God who created you, who formed you in the womb, has drawn close enough to actively search your heart.

Every single thing you are going through, He knows.

Every trial and hardship you face, every victory, He sees.

Every cry you utter, every wordless groan your spirit makes, He hears.

I pray you have comfort and confidence in being fully seen, known, and loved by El-Roi, the God who sees me (and you!).

Action Steps:

  • Read Isaiah 43:1 and insert your name.

  • Look back on what God has done for you to remind yourself of His presence and involvement in your life.

Prayer: God, I thank You for seeing us and everything we go through. Thank You for never taking Your eyes off of us. Will You remind us of this truth when we feel like You are nowhere to be found, and help us trust You in every season of life? Your faithfulness is amazing, and we love You. Amen.
