An Unchanging Calling

“Many things changed, and it seemed like nothing was changing for the better. Two things stayed constant, though: God and His calling.”

“And don't be wishing you were someplace else or with someone else. Where you are now is God's place for you. Live and obey and love and believe right there. God, not your marital status, defines your life. Don't think I'm being harder on you than the others. I give this same counsel in all the churches.” 1st Corinthians 7:17 MSG

It seems to be human nature to wish things were different, especially in difficult chapters of life. Maybe you long for a different job, a better financial circumstance, a better marriage/different marital status, or for parenting to be less challenging. And if you are anything like me, your first response to difficult chapters and/or situations is the desire to be out of them.

I recently experienced what felt like ages of difficulty and turmoil. My marriage was on the rocks, I was facing new and what seemed to be constant challenges in caring for a family member, and I had my son to try to guide through everything going on. Many things changed, and it seemed like nothing was changing for the better. Two things stayed constant, though: God and His calling.

God called me to be my son's mom, and that responsibility remains, regardless of circumstance. Jobs change. Physical and mental health change. Living situations, family dynamics, and sometimes marital status can all change; the fact that I'm a mom does not. God called me to “live and obey and love and believe right there”; He has called you to do the same. He has placed you where you are for a purpose, and He made you your children's mom on purpose. With His help, you can rise to the occasion and honor Him exactly where you are.

Action step:

  • Ask God to show you what He’s doing in and through you where you are. If you are in a difficult situation, cry out to Him. Surrender your circumstances and your feelings to your loving Father.

Prayer: God, some of the situations You place us in are just plain hard and painful. However, You call us to trust You, and You promise to be with us. Please forgive us our shortcomings and help us to trust You more. Empower us to love those around us, trust and believe You, and truly live right where we are. Amen.
