Acquitted by God

“When the world or our own minds find us guilty as moms, in God's court we are acquitted, our mistakes as far removed from us as the east is from the west.”

“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1 NLT

We all experience motherhood differently. We became moms at different ages. Some of us have more kids than others, and our kids’ personalities and ages are different. One thing that ties us all together, though, is mom guilt.

It's so easy to look back over our time as moms and have regrets and guilt over what we did or didn't do. My mind loves to remind me of my failures, be they objective or perceived. Times I was impatient, lost my cool, and yelled. Times I wasn't as understanding or empathetic as I should have been. Instances of being too strict or too lax in my parenting, fun things I wish I had done with my son, things I wished I had learned about him sooner.

It's so easy to look in the mirror and see mistakes, but that is not how God views us. For those of us who have accepted Jesus, God sees righteousness and innocence paid for with the blood of His Son. We are new creations forgiven and made holy by our Savior. When the world or our own minds find us guilty as moms, in God's court we are acquitted, our mistakes as far removed from us as the east is from the west. We have no need to fear condemnation from the God who is both our judge and justifier.

Action Steps:

  • When mom guilt rears its head, take it to God and accept His forgiveness.

  • Ask God to remind you of who He says you are and spend time in the Word to reinforce His definition of you.
