"We need the word of God to show us our path and to bring our steps from darkness to light."

“Your word is lamp to my feet and a light to my path” Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
One summer in my young adult years I volunteered to be a “hill walker” at the 4-H camp I attended as a kid. Hill walkers were there to be an extra hand as needed during camp, but their main job was to stay up late, walk around the hills that cabins were on, and make sure that kids were in their cabins and everyone was safe. It sounded so easy. I didn’t have to do much and I got to spend time with one of my friends.
What my friend and I didn’t realize was that being a hill walker was scary. Imagine two, small, young girls walking around the woods in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night. It was dark. It was hard to see. We didn’t last long.
Have you ever been on a dark path? Somewhere where it was hard to see? Have you ever stumbled around in the dark desperate for a light so you can see where you’re going?
That’s what it's like when we don’t have the word of God guiding us. Sometimes we think we can do this on our own, that it will be easy, but then we start out on our path and realize we were wrong. The world is dark and causes us to stumble. We need a light. We need the word of God to show us our path and to bring our steps from darkness to light.
The Bible teaches us so many things and equips us to live the life God planned for us. In the Bible we see God’s character which is loving and gracious. We receive commands and guidelines for how we should live, how we should act and how we should treat others. Reading the Bible teaches us how to pray, giving us connection with God Himself. There’s relationship advice, parenting advice, marriage advice. There’s even help for when we face challenges and enemies.
Reading the Bible daily is essential to our walk with God, but it can be a challenge. If you struggle to read the Bible every day, you are NOT alone. I’ve struggled with reading the bible during my entire faith journey. We, as moms, are so, so busy. When everything else is on our minds it's easy for Bible reading to be farther down on the list of things to do.
Mamas, we HAVE to prioritize reading our Bibles. Even one verse a day can bring a little extra light into your life and home.
Action Steps:
Read your Bible!!!
Is this a challenge for you? Here are some tips:
Use the Bible App. You can sign up to get the verse of the day as a push notification. It takes less than a minute to read it and if you have extra time you can read the whole chapter that the verse is taken from. The Bible App also has an audio feature if listening is more your thing.
Use a reading plan. You can search the internet for suggestions based on topics or you can follow a yearly plan.
Get your children involved! Do you not get alone time because there’s always a toddler touching you? Read the Bible to your kiddos, even if they’re very young.
Ask a friend to help you stay committed and to give you accountability.
Don’t forget to make sure your children are receiving God’s word too!
