Missional Motherhood

“He has charged us to go and make disciples, and making disciples starts in our home.”

ree
“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

‭‭(Matthew‬ ‭28‬:‭19‬, ‭NLT‬‬)

No matter the season, the mission is still the same. The great commission, like the Great I Am, never changes. He has charged us to go and make disciples, and making disciples starts in our home. The floor under our roof and the space between our walls truly is our greatest mission field.

Speaking of seasons, this time of year is a season in and of itself! A transitional season for all of us. Another school year winds down. Another summer ramps up. Ceremonies and celebrations fill the calendar page, and Pomp and Circumstance plays as they march across the stage. And it all just touches the heart, triggers the emotions, and turns on the tears.

These things remind me that these children of mine are not really mine at all. They are His and have been all along. And each stage has meaning and purpose as we walk with our children through the stage of life they’re currently in, from childhood to adulthood, learning to embrace with grace the most important lesson of motherhood…

We can let go because He never will. Just like planting seeds in the springtime, those seeds will never grow if we don’t let them go.

I heard a song recently that reminded me of the truth we must cling to as we let go of them.

And ironically, the lyrics liken letting go to giving birth.

Mama, I know letting go is hard, but I also know trusting God is good. It’s good for them. It’s good for us. God’s got us all, and He won’t let us go. It’s a lesson we all have to learn, and these transitional days are some of the best teachers.

We may be letting go, but He never will.

Take a moment to:

  • Read the lyrics or listen to “I Won’t Let You Go” by Switchfoot

  • Reflect: Is there anything that you’re holding on to, or trying to control on your own, that you need to let go of so you can live out this command to make disciples out of your children? Are you letting your children spread their wings and step into their own callings?
