I’m Still Gonna Walk Fast

“This devo is for you but also, most definitely, for me.”

“Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.” Genesis 2:3

I was standing in line at the bank when the gentleman in front of me turns around and asks, “Are you in a hurry?” I (kinda) jokingly replied, “I’m always in a hurry”. What happened next cracks me up…he just shrugged his shoulders and turned back around to wait his turn. I immediately turned my eyes upward and said to Him, “Ok, I see You”.

This devo is for you but also, most definitely, for me.

Jesus was the epitome of the slow-down. He was not rushed, ever. He didn’t start His ministry until He was 30 years old. He didn’t kick it up a gear when a dear friend and a girl could have avoided death. He even slept during a storm! He chose a colt over a thoroughbred. He was known for His easy pace. He lived life at a godly pace.

Except there was the one time that Jesus hurried.

“They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid.” (Mark 10:32) The disciples were astonished, and the followers were afraid because this seemed out of character for Jesus. They were used to His easy paced life. They knew that if He was in a hurry, something big was stirring.

Jesus hurried to the cross. The one time He hurried, it was to face my sin. That brings me so much pause. You too? I hurry to accomplish tasks. I hurry to get everyone where they need to be, I hurry because I don’t know any other pace right now. And hurrying leaves me no Sabbath, no rest.

I need to hurry to a godly pace, to the cross.

Action Steps:

  • There is so much more to this that can be ruminated on. Let’s focus on our hurry by observing. What are we hurrying to? Is our hurry to minister, to advance the kingdom of God? Or to cater to our chaos? What can be altered to reduce the hurry?

  • Let’s really give Mark 11 a good read, a good look. Scrutinize the words and the hurry of Jesus. Take notes.

Prayer: Father, interrupt our pace with Yours. We get on a roll and can’t seem to slow down. Show us the work of the cross. While we adopt a godly pace, let us rest in that. Like, a true, deep sigh, rest. This is a physical and mental change that needs to happen, so take hold of both. Yes and Amen.
