God Is My BFF

When we put our relationship with God above all other relationships, we’re sure to receive the protection and security we desire.”

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:2 ESV

A quick Google search will prove to you that there are many benefits to having relationships. Not just marriages but friendships too. They bring less stress, greater sense of purpose, healthier habits and longer lives. God even calls us to be in relationships. Hebrews 10:24-25 says “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” What He doesn’t want is our relationship with other people to replace our relationship with Him.

I’ve spent most of my life chasing relationships. I’ve always enjoyed having others to lean on and be my security blanket whether it be my parents, close friends, a boyfriend, or eventually, a husband. I even lean on my children as a sense of purpose in my life. There’s been times when I felt like I was defined by my relationships. Like I wouldn’t be me, I wouldn’t know what to do without those people in my life. I would even go as far as to say sometimes I didn’t feel safe without having certain relationships to protect me, mostly on an emotional level. You can imagine that hasn’t always gone well for me. Family, friends, boyfriends, husbands, even children, are not guaranteed to always be there, and then we’re left with a mess to clean up by ourselves.

Only God is our rock and our fortress, a place of safety, security and shelter.

Only God can deliver us, from our sin, from our addictions, from our enemies.

Only God can be our shield, for our heads, and for our hearts.

Only He can be our strength, our defense, our strongholds.

There’s not one person on this earth that can be that for you. But God can. When we put our relationship with God above all other relationships, we’re sure to receive the protection and security we desire. When we put our relationship with God first, it won’t matter what happens in our earthly relationships because our strength will be coming from our God. We may still be left with a mess to clean up, but we won’t be cleaning it up alone.

Action Step:

  • Reflect: Is there a relationship in your life that you’re putting above God? It might even be your kids! What would happen if you lost that relationship?

  • Who do you turn to for security and comfort? If something happens in your life, do you go to God first? Or do you text your best friend?

  • If you need extra help remembering this, copy today’s verse onto a Post-It and hang it somewhere you’ll see it often.
