God Is in the Quiet

“God didn’t speak to Elijah in the mountain-tearing wind, nor the earthquake or the fire, but rather in the sound of a low whisper.”

“And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper” 1 Kings 19:11-12

Hearing from God is essential for motherhood. In every season there’s so much uncertainty, so many situations we need help with, so many questions that need to be answered. And we want these answers to come from God, not the world, which is so loud and constantly in our ears. But it can be so difficult to hear past the chaos of kids and schedules.

Recently, a friend shared a blurb from The Bible Knowledge Commentary that says the Old Testament is full of God speaking in different ways, from dreams to visions, through prophets and even sometimes an audible voice. However, today, we mostly have access to His voice through His written word.

His voice is not always quite as obvious as a burning bush and a voice from heaven.

In today's passage about God speaking to Elijah, we see God speaking in a way that I think reflects the way He speaks today. God didn’t speak to Elijah in the mountain-tearing wind, nor the earthquake or the fire, but rather in the sound of a low whisper.

How often do we pray for answers and then expect a large, neon sign or a loud, obvious voice, only to be met with a whisper, or even silence?

Listen, mamas, God is speaking to us even today. But we have to listen. If we don’t take the time to stop, slow down, and listen for that low whisper, then we might miss what God is speaking to us.

Action Step:

  • Take a moment today to get into the Word, quiet your to-do list, and listen for the quiet whisper of God’s voice.

Prayer: God, I ask You to speak to us. We want to hear from You. We want Your guidance and direction, we want to know Your ways and to know what Your Word says about every situation we may face. But we’re moms, and we’re distracted. Will You help us with that? Help us to supernaturally prioritize time in our days to sit quietly with You, hopefully distraction free, but even if we have little ones with us, bless our time with You so we can hear You whether it’s a whisper or a strong wind. We’re so grateful You speak to us time after time, even when we struggle to listen. We love You, Lord. Amen.
