Choose Stillness

“When we choose to practice being still on a soul level, God is glorified.”

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10

You know some of the million things I love about Jesus? He never asks us once to worry or toil or hurry. He’s not frantic or antsy or scrambling. He’s not pushy or demanding or unrealistic.

But that last one, though. Unrealistic.

I’ve been tempted a few times to think what He asks of us may be teetering there. Times when I’ve looked at the freedom Jesus wants to offer me and wondered how realistic it may be for my season in life. For the newborn months, the toddler years, the teen schedules.

But I’m often reminded of Isaiah 40:11, “He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.” This passage is soaked with grace. Not to excuse us moms from His call, but to wrap us in understanding that in our motherhood what He asks of us may look different. That when we choose to practice being still on a soul level, God is glorified. If we practice the principles of sabbath rest and solitude, connecting to Jesus in the moments of our days, He promises that our hearts and lives will stand as a light on a hill to those who are worn out, chasing the next thing, trying to find their worth in productivity. And as we are changed by it, people will be drawn like a moth to a light, to the goodness of God and the easy yoke of Jesus.

In choosing stillness, momma, those moments of quiet will undeniably bleed over into our other days and by default slow our pace, bringing us back into the cadence that God wove into His creation: being fulfilled in our work, and resting in the fact that He is all we need and that in Him alone we find our value.

And for us as mothers, as keepers of the home, our pace will set the cadence of our families. Our children will be able to see first-hand the wisdom of God’s ways. They’ll be able to witness a momma who made the hard choices for their own good. Our small, purposeful choices of obedience, will help our children to grow up in the freedom of walking God's ways. And in turn, God will be exalted. Our imperfect steps toward practicing stillness, of our heart and of our moments, they make much of the name of Jesus in the eyes of those who are watching.

Action Step:

  • Take a moment today to just be still, to quiet your heart and just sit in the presence of God.
