Astonishing Lies

“Sometimes the voices of lies are so loud, it feels like they are drowning out everything else.”

“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.” Galatians 1:6-7 ESV
Whewwww, Paul sure seems peeved. I don’t reckon he is someone who’s bad side I’d want to be on. At least our ears woulda been safe around an angry Paul, unlike….cough….Peter…cough.
Why was Paul so upset in his letter to the Galatians?
Well, some religious preachers had moved to the area and were distorting what Paul had literally just taught the Galatians - that the gospel of Jesus Christ was the only way to be in good standing with God. The religious preachers were teaching that certain actions of the old Jewish law ought to still be performed in order to justify ourselves before God. Paul was frustrated with the Galatians because they were following a lie and had so quickly forgotten the truth that he had JUST finished teaching them. (Side note, I can relate to Paul a little here….”I JUST told you not to smoosh a popsicle all over your face, why are you doing it again?!”)
Moms, do you ever find yourselves following or under the influence of a lie? I will be the first to admit it. Sometimes the voices of lies are so loud, it feels like they are drowning out everything else. Or sometimes a lie is so sneaky and sly that it slowly creeps up on us, disguised as truth.
Maybe you find yourself believing the lie that you’d be a better mom if only you tried harder (even though you’re already giving it all you’ve got, and you’re at your wits end).
Or maybe the lie is you would be a happier mom if you lived in a house like your friends have, had this item or that item that your friends have?
Moms, Jesus handpicked you specifically to be the mom of your specific kiddo(s). He knew exactly what kind of mom you were going to be when He called you. Rest in that truth. You know the good news - that through Jesus we are justified! You know that is the one and only truth!
And it’s in that truth, that you can find peace and give yourself some grace, knowing you’re good enough because of God.
Action Step:
What lies do you find yourself believing, mama? What came to mind when you were reading? Write them down, then draw a line through them! Find scripture to replace the lie with the truth.
Prayer: God, I pray over all the mamas reading this. I pray that as they read, they are reminded of and never forget the abundant love You have for them. Your love is so great that You sacrificed Your only Son, so that we could be made right before You, and could spend eternity at Your side. May we never forget this truth, even on the most difficult days of our motherhood journeys. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
